Getting Started

You will now prepare a speech outline. Your final speech will be uploaded in Workshop Four. Your speech must have an informative purpose. The speech must inform the audience of an organization that is working to make a difference in the lives of people in your community or region. If you select something related to a church, be sure you develop their social outreach programs, such as a food pantry, rather than their spiritual outreach. You need to include statistics, facts, and examples of how this organization is making this difference. Remember, this is an informative, not a persuasive, speech. Examples of outlining are in chapters 9.4 and 11.1 of your textbook.

Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:

Present methods in which an organization empowers a community or region through communication.

  • Textbook: Communication in the Real World: An Introduction to Communication Studies, Chapter 9 and 11.

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Review Chapter 9 with attention to pages 481-485 (in section 9.4 Outlining) of the textbook, as well as chapter 11.1 of the textbook.
  3. Prepare the Formal outline for your speech (illustrated on page 481-485).
  4. The Formal Outline should use outline sequencing and be fully developed: it should have a complete introduction, body, and conclusion, use fully developed sentences and transitions. Furthermore, be sure to list your sources in a reference section at the conclusion of the outline.
