Description

most of us have heard the term “woke” used to refer to awareness of social issues. Like most social trends, the term usually evokes an emotional response depending on your stance on certain issues.

PART 1: For your discussion this week I would like you to consider the term “woke.”

  1. How did the term originate? Do a quick search online or using the library’s databases. Be sure to cite your sources.
  2. Do you think being woke is a good thing or a bad thing? Can it be both?
  3. Do you think there is a connection between being woke and the current trend of “cancel culture” that seems to be taking hold on social media and in Hollywood?

Some recent examples of victims of cancel culture are Ellen Degeneres, Jenna Marbles, James Charles, Jeffree Star, Adam Rapoport (editor of Bon Apetit), Thom Brennaman (sportscaster), Kyle Cornell (a radio anchor from Ohio). You may know of more than are listed here.

*Note – I don’t intend this discussion to be political. I want you rather to focus on the issue of social consciousness, which is important to all of us. Discussions on politics can quickly devolve. Also, please don’t use any offensive language or slurs here, even if you are repeating something someone else said. I trust we can keep this discussion focused, mature, and on topic.

Part 2:

write an outline and submit at least three sources (annotated bibliography) for an argumentative essay in which you answer the following question:

Is being “woke” a good or a bad thing? (keep in mind this is for a paper you will develop from outline which should be 4 – 5 pages in length)

think about how you will approach this essay. The first thing you will need to do is decide where you stand on the position above. Do some research and decide on at least three sources that will help you to make your case on being woke. Create a brief annotated bibliography to submit in which you describe your sources.
