1.What are the most important constitutional amendments relating the policing, and why? In your answer, cite specific court cases and contemporary policing examples to support your point.

2. Goldstein remarked that “If both legal mandates and public expectations are taken literally, and if the reality of the situations that the police confront is recognized, the demands on the police appear so contradictory that the police task is simply unworkable—an impossible mission.” What does he mean by this? In your answer, provide some contemporary examples of these contradictions.

3.Define community policing, problem-oriented policing, and policing/predictive policing. Describe how these policing strategies differ from the standard model of policing and how they score on the two dimensions outlined by the authors – diversity of approaches (the content of practices) and level of focus (targeting of police activities). Given the research, what approach do you think would be most effective and why?

9. What does Platt mean when he says that the US is in a state of “pervasive institutional security & social insecurity”? In your answer, provide specific examples from the texts and contemporary examples in the news/media.

10. Do you agree with Alexander’s description of the criminal justice system as “the new Jim Crow”? Why or why not? In your answer, be sure to explain her thesis about “the new Jim Crow” before outlining whether you agree/disagree with her.
