Prompt
Your first entry will consist of two paragraphs. See detailed guidance on your initial entry and responses to peers below.
1. Your initial entry:
- First paragraph:
- Katniss is becoming more reflective and perceptive. Notice on pg. 59 how she recognizes the ways in which she has had to contend with the power of others and then on pg. 91 where she realizes her own power over others. What advice would you offer Katniss in light of her growing awareness of power. In what ways is this positive, and in what ways is this a challenge? How is power best maintained? What causes power to become corrupt?
- Second paragraph:
- On page 67 Katniss wonders if the extra security precautions are due to the influx of immigrants, including herself. Think about the relationship between an established society and those seeking to become part of it. Of course, this happens within small scale groups as well: a church, a school, a circle of friends. The extent of these scenarios are all different, but in all cases it is usually fear of the unknown that plays a large part in how the outsiders are treated and whether or not they are ultimately welcomed. So, what are your thoughts? You might consider you are a citizen of District 13–what would your thoughts be? Or, perhaps you consider things from the side of Katniss’s mother, Gale, and Prim as immigrants. (Essentially, at the heart of this scenario are the questions I want you to consider: What is right? Is what’s “right” right for all? Who decides? And HOW do we decide? These are tough questions, but don’t shy away from them.)
2. Responses to peers:
- Read the entries of your peers and respond thoughtfully and substantively to at least one of your peers to receive full credit for this assignment.
- What do you find most interesting about their responses, and why? Did they make points that were similar to or different from your own?
