Description
Friends,
We will explore conflict and communication strategies for resolving conflict and fighting fair.
Please view the following scene from The Break Up and using the following questions for prompts write a detailed analysis of the competent and incompetent communication used and generate strategies to increase competence (effective and appropriate).
USE COURSE CONCEPTS. PUT THESE TERMS IN BOLD PRINT AND INCLUDE A DEFINITION IN ( ).
1. What type of conflict is present in this scene? Is there more than one type? Explain your identifications. (Pseudo, Fact, Value, Policy, Meta, Ego)
HIM
1. Which styles does he use during the conflict? (Withdrawing, Competing, Accommodating, Collaborating, Compromising) Does his style change?
2. Whose “face” is he most concerned with protecting? His? Hers? Mutual? Explain. How does this choice affect the communication?
3. What types of destructive behavior does he engage in ( serial arguing, counter-blaming, cross-complaining, demand withdrawal, mutual hostility)? Explain.
4. What are five specific communication techniques/strategies he could have used to be a more competent communicator? Explain how he could have done each. These strategies can come from any chapter of the text ( content paraphrase, owning feelings, describing rather than evaluating behavior…) but give special attention to strategies covered in chapter 11 ( have ground rules, avoid blaming, find commonalities…)
5. What could he have done to attempt forgiveness?
6. What key advice would you give Him to be a more competent communicator and a better partner?
