Here’s the paragraph:
Throughout history, there has been slang that the youths have fancied, often to the chagrin of the older generation. Not that all older people hate slang, but rather they were often raised with a different respect to grammar and language than generation X and Y. Along with that, the definition of proper language has changed slightly with the times. Many of the people who are partial to using slang feel that it is simply the evolution of spoken language and that there is nothing inherently wrong with using it. Slang is thought to simplify things all while exhibiting how hip you are. Others feel that using slang is destroying formal language as we know it, removing the need to speak formally and slowly dumbing us all down. One can’t help but wonder if Mr. Genzlinger’s observations are correct or if it’s merely an exaggeration made by someone unwilling to change with the times. Slang is often considered the evolution of a spoken language or the deterioration of formal language. As an elderly person in the body of a young woman, I often fall slightly more in the middle of the debate. I’m guilty of speaking in slang, some days more than I’d like to admit. I feel that there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with using slang every once and a while, but I do believe that we shouldn’t let it consume us. I feel that a problem arises once you mostly speak in slang and can no longer form a grammatically correct sentence.
